Yesterday afternoon I went out with Diamond Dave as he is known locally.
I first fished the beach in the afternoon and tried to fool one of the numerous beach Snook. Unfortunately not one was interested in eating a fly even though I tried everything in the flybox.
I did not get skunked though. I casted a small clouser minnow to a cruising Snook. The Snook took off but a small Lizardfish wanted the fly badly.
The mighty Lizardfish, thank god those little monsters stay small.
In the evening I went with Dave to pond X for some Tarpon fishing lessons. I tangled with five Tarpons and did lot's of things wrong. I striked woth the rod high, yanked flies from Tarpons mouths and did not strike hard enough. When Tarpon nr. 6 hit I did everything right. According to Dave it was a 25 pounder. I fought it a long time but as usual the Tarpon spit the hook in the end. At least Dave managed to get a nice Snook.
This morning I went with Michael to pond X. Action was slower than yesterday but fish where still rolling. I fished a hot pink/chartreuse EP minnow and got an early hit. Half an hour later I finally hooked a smaller Tarpon and fought it all the way to the bank. I landed my first ever Tarpon on the fly! Thanks to Dave and Mark for getting me this far.
If you see the picture you might think I was asleep or drunk. Let me clarify this right away, I was in shock about my first Tarpon!
Later in the morning Michael hooked his first Tarpon and made it jump a couple of feet out of the water. Instinctively he struck high as troutfisherman tend to do. So the fly was yanked out of the Tarpon. He will get one though before we leave down here.
