“Dutch freshwater sharks”
It is getting cold, wet and rainy outside, so the PikeCup starts again. Today was the first session of four. Four Sunday mornings of fishing from 9.00 hour till 12.00 hour. The one with the largest pike and/or the most pike in centimetres/inches becomes the “pike king”.
The mushrooms are in numerous numbers and different species present.
Today was the first session of four. At 9.00 hour the fishing places in the Buurserbeek were divided among leadership of Joop and everyone went his way to hunt the pike. It was rainy and cold, real “pike weather”. I went together with Robert and Joop and we left downstream in the direction of Haaksbergen. By my first throw under a bridge, my streamer (red/white) was attacked already by a pike. By the second and third throw the streamer was again attacked. The fourth throw was a hit and the streamer was fully grabbed and I managed to land the pike. A pike of 21 inches was the result.
Robert and Joop did fierce attempts only without result.
By the junction of the Zoddebeek and the Buurserbeek, my streamer was followed and moved by a large pike. We remained do fierce attempts to get the pike on the dry and finally the streamer on the same spot was moved by a smaller pike. At landing the pike, the fish shook its head and dehooked itself. Afterwards Robert missed two times a pike on a stretch of the stream of thirty meters. Finally the patience was rewarded. I threw my streamer in the water and let it sink and I started stripping the streamer… suddenly my streamer was attacked by a large pike and the drill started. After a couple of minutes, the fish was landed safely and had I a pike of 33 inches in my hands.
It became 12.00 hour and we had to go back to our meeting point, where gluhwein (a kind of wine), herfstbok (a kind of beer), chocomel and hotdogs were served by chef of the kitchen Joop. The catering is always excellent arranged by Joop.
There were this day 5 pikes caught varied in length of 20 inches until 33 inches.
Greetings Hans F.
