Yesterday afternoon after we got evicted from pond X we fished Gordon pass for a change. A steady breeze came from the Gulf but the water was still clear. As we walked on the beach we saw several Snook in the surf and tried to get them eat flies. The Snook where not cooperating though.
Near the pass I fished one of the jetties and to my surprise I hooked a nice Jack Crevalle, the first nice one on the fly in all those weeks I have been down here.
Jack Crevalle on a EP pinfish fly.
On this day I was fishing with Diamond Dave. It was pretty quiet on the beach with only schools of mullet passing by. Dave moved on to fish the flat inside the inlet. When I saw gulls going crazy inside the inlet I raced to the action. Diamond Dave had just hooked into a Jack Crevalle.
Gordon pass.
When I moved on to the jetty I saw dozens of Snook moving into the inlet.
A couple of them where close to me cruising along the rocks.
I made a cast towards them and one of the smaller guys took the fly.
Small Snook from the inlet.
Diamond Dave had to quit early so we left the scene before sunset. In the mean time the Westerly winds had muddied up the beach waters.
Later that day I went to Naples pier to watch the sunset and talked to one of the pier regulars. Big Jacks had roamed the pier earlier that day. I wished I was there. Maybe I will have to give the pier another try before I leave.
Today we where out on a sharkfishing mission. It would be boatfishing with either flygear or spinning gear. We tried for Snook in Gordon pass early morning but since the tide was not running fish where not eating.
We fished the beach at Keewaydin Island when we saw gulls working bait
A Tarpon was spotted close to the beach. I had one Ladyfish on the fly but could not get any more than that even though predators where chasing bait.
We needed chum for the sharks so we headed out to one of the outer markers of the pass for some castnetting. Mark made a good cast with the net and hauled in a ton of bait. The catch consisted of Scaled sardines, Whitebait, Jacks and a Spanish Mackerel.
Tons of bait from the marker.
After getting the bait we chummed various places to lure the sharks in. Unfortunetely they never came. The phrase "chum them and they will come" only applied to a catfish who slimed Michaels bait.
We tried or best to catch something but it was just one of those days.
We had a lunchbreak at the Isle of Capri near Marco Island.
Our last hope was to catch the sharks at the sandbar near Capri pass.
After a long wait Michael finally hooked into a fish.
Michael and his first Bluefish.
So Michael hauled in a Bluefish all the way down in Marco Island.
Tomorrow we will be off on an offshore trip in a last ditch effort to get some new fish species on the fly.
