Curtis Grant is a fountain of local knowledge for area fly fishers. In his first class last night, Curtis demonstrated how to tie two sure-bet, all-purpose flies for Reds, Sea Trout, and Snook. And, while he was demonstrating each short cut, method and technique, he enlightened the class on fish habitats, tides, gear selections, casting techniques, baitfish, area hot spots....you name it, Curtis has the answer.

He gave up information on specific areas where the wading angler can spot and fish for tailing Redfish and where and when the Snook are piled up....BIG Snook. He told how to cast to tailing Reds, how to tempt a Snook from the deep holes to strike, how to effectively cast to schools of Trout...and, where and when each species is found here....Locally!

Curtis's great enthusiasm for fly fishing is inspiring throughout his presentation and everyone left this first class with a feeling of excitement and confidence I've seldom witnessed. Each class participant also left class with two well-tied killer flies in his pocket to duplicate, and test out on the fish. We have the materials here at the shop too and I can provide follow-up lessons.

The next class is January 26 at 6 PM here at the shop. Bring $10 and mark your calendar for the other classes; February 9 & 23, March 9 & 23, April 6 & 20.

calvin,

Curtis starts with green flat waxed thread on a long shanked salt hook.
Next was white bucktail tied in near the bend, along with some flashabou, krystal flash of progesssivly darker colors as it nears the top of the bucktail. Then he strips the rope off an inch and a half of large Mylar braid, pushes it through the eye and ties it in at thejust behind the eye so it flares back over the bucktail. He sticks on some eyes and coats the front 2/3 of the mylar with 2-part epoxy. (Be sure to use equal parts of hardener and resin) He dries the head by turning the fly in either a Renzetti vise or in forcepts. VOILA!
cheers
