Todd Lappatito invited me abord his Hewes Redfisher today to prospect out of Bayview Landing to Rookery Bay. We knew that the tide was not going to be optimal, but the weather was the best in over a week, so we put in around 9 AM and began the hunt. Todd's craft is ideal for two fly anglers and with 115 HP, it gets up in a hurry!
Todd isn't at all new to fishing. He's at home in Alaskan waters during the summer where he commercial fishes from a 36-foot boat he owns and operates crab pots, nets for Salmon and rigs for Halibut. He asked me if his casting was up to par. I said "Hell, yes".
We tied up some nifty crab flies recommended by Guide Capt. Kevin Merrit and even though the tidal push wasn't anything to write home about, we hooked up.
Todd landed five or six of these beautiful Specs all over 17" and used a buff-colored Mangrove Bunny and chartreuse Clouser, fishing a floating line all day. I alternated with my Orvis 30-foot type 6 and my Redfish Wonderline. Kevin's trusty Crab Fly pattern (pictured next to a natural above) is one of my favorite patterns.
