6 PM at the Everglades Angler Shop and the doors are closed. At the back stock room fly tying table, Curtis Grant digs through his tying materials, passing out feathers, hooks, and flash to each angler. Curtis is excited. He knows this pattern is a winner and as he grabs the ingredients he gets even more excited explaining why the fly attracts fish.
As Curtis explains each step in the construction of the fly, he explains the properties of the materials, he shows why setting the angle of the wings makes a difference in how the fly will ride in the water. This is the stuff you can't always read from a book. The INSIDE information that many fly tiers keep to themselves.
Some of the steps in the construction of the three killer patterns we tied were complicated. Curtis provided a helping hand...a one-on-one with each tyer, making sure each fly was set up correctly.
The stories Curtis tells during class are fascinating. Laced with humor, mixed in with directions, filled with his experiences catching fish all over the world. His experiences are a virtual road map for those of us who want to go where he has been.
Thanks for another great class, Curtis. See you in two weeks.
