On Thursday I was invited to go fishing with my friend John Finch and his uncle Alec Pulling. We put in at the Caxambas ramp and were off. We tried some of the passes on the outside of the beach heading south with nothing but some tiny ladyfish, but there were snook hitting under some mangroves. The bait was abundant although it was mostly too small. We hit all of the passes on the south side of the island, and continued to head south to try the grass flats for some trout. The water got real dirty as soon as we rounded the end of the island. After fishing in the flats with no luck we decided to head back to where we were. On the way back in one of the passes we noticed a small channel off to the side. The mangroves were all over the place and we hard to get into, but as soon as we did we caught three snook and a redfish almost immediately. This small channel ran about 4 to 5 feet deep and looked as though no one had ever been there. We were stuck on half of the channel so we went out and came around to the other side of the channel from the inside, that was even harder to get into. But we got through and saw small schools of mullet everywhere. We continued up until we found a spot we liked and tossed the lines in. We caught three more redfish and a couple of snapper. It turned out the be a great day. The key was the live bait and not the jigs. And the bugs werent too bad except for the early morning.
