I fished offshore yesterday afternoon and the fishing was good. We went with the hopes of catching permit that have been frequenting a wreck about 10 miles off of the beach. In addition to live crabs, one throw of the cast net provided enough threadfin herring to be able to bottom fish as well. As soon as we anchored the boat, a school of permit swam by, but would not eat the live crabs we threw to them. We were able to boat 3 big mangrove snapper up to 4 pounds though. because of the structure that we were fishing on, only 1 in 8 bites would result in a fish on the deck- the rest were broken off or the hooks straightened out. I have not experienced a 'big' snapper bite like that during the day in a long time. Most of the big snapper I catch are on night trips offshore. We did miss 1 permit on a crab. We finished off the baits in the well by fishing the last of the outgoing tide in Gordon pass which was cranking. We did catch three nice slot sized snook which were released to do their spring spawn thing. The tide was the key to the fishing, but it may be slowing down slightly in the next week or so. As we get closer to the new moon the tides will pick up again. Get out and go fishing! :D
