On Friday night I was invited to go fishing with my friend Kyle Nicholas in Caxambas. He brought along his friend WT Pearson and I brought my friend John Finch. The night started off great, we got down to the Caxambas boat ramp around 7:30 to put the boat in the water only to find the ramp closed. We hung around and talked to a guy that was stuck inside the ramp. He called the cops to open the gate and let him out. When the cops arrived we asked if we could just drop the boat in the water and leave, luckily they said yes! I took the boat around to the dock we were going from, and where he would be parking the car. On the way to the day we saw tarpon rolling in the setting sun. When we got to the dock we picked up WT and Kyle and were off for a night we would not soon forget. We hit a couple lights across the bay to try and get some live bait. We didnt get any shiners but we did get a 10 inch ladyfish which would prove very good bait later on in the night. We continued to go through the lights looking for bait, only finding big pods of catfish under the majority of the SNOOK lights. We finally found a light that was loaded with bait, and they were all nice sized. I cast netted some shiners and we were off to catch the "big ones." We tryed a couple lights in some of the canals only to find more catfish pods. We started to head back towards "base camp" when we spotted a light that was in the current, and was on a drop off. We anchored about 15 feet from the light and started casting the shiners in and letting them drift through. Every now and then we would see a monster snook swim through and then there would be 3 monsters at one time. I soon hooked up and within seconds it had cut me off on the rocks. After that i decided to hook the lady fish up to one of the bigger rods and toss it out behing the boat. I re-rigged my rod and threw another shiner back in the water only to get cut off again by a big snook. I re-rigged yet again this time with bigger leader and guess what i got cut off again. After that I decided I was done for a little while with the snook fishing. Right after that WT hooked up to a big fish and got it in the boat. It was a 33 inch snook, it was his first big snook! Right after WT got that one in the boat John pulled in a 14 inch mangrove snapper. I decided to reel in the the ladyfish and see how it was. I reeled it in an it was still alive and kicking, that would be the last time I ever see that ladyfish again. I tossed it back out, and before I could even put the rod in the holder, the tarpon was in the air, and we were off! It took us on a mile and a half run around the pass. That tarpon pulled into a foot of water and gut us stuck, so we pulled the motor up and let it pull us back out. The tarpon jumped 4 times and was an awesome fight, but we finally got him in the boat. We guessed that it was about 5' 10", we measured it with WT's snook. We think it weighed between 100 and 150. After that WT had to get back to land so we dropped him off and went back out. The second time we went out it was around 2:00 in the morning and were ready for some more fish. We ended up catching another 14 inch mangrove snapper a 26 inch snook, and a 37 inch snook, it was on heck of a night that we will night soon forget!
Yea, the rope there so that we didnt lose it before we got the pictures taken. Kyle had to run to the store to get a camera so we kept it in the water, and that was our insurance.
The Tarpon was revived but we needed to allow the fish to swim while I ran to the store to get a camera. Other than the few scales that folded over, the fish was returned in good condition. And as far as the snook are concerned.... They are doing mighty fine in my stomach....
