2 days of fishing, 30 hours on the water, 1 fish! What an awesome trip! The whole Delaware River experience is second to none. Those fish are tricky enough when the conditions are perfect, but add in the pressure of father’s day weekend (a lot of people on the water), very low and slick calm water, and eighteen million different bugs coming off, and fishing turns into hunting. Sneaking around, casting from your knees, and stealthy presentations were the order.
For those of you who have never fished the “Big D”, I’ll fill you in on the fish….they’re HUGE and there are a lot of them. The only problem is that they are manic. They might rise once every hour, they refuse a perfect drift over and over, and god help you if you have to sneeze because that will definitely put them down. In other terms, these fish are some of the toughest targets that I have ever casted to, and I loved it! I can’t even imagine how many people have lost their jobs, families, and homes because of these trout. Believe it or not, after a day on the “Big D” you feel like you were run over by a train after downing an eighteen pack of Milwaukee’s Best. And for some reason of another when I returned to FL, I found myself uncontrollably false casting in my front yard with no rod in hand while staring at the puddle in my driveway. Oh by the way on the last cast of the first day, in the dark, I did get a decent little brown!
