About a week ago Kyle, John, and I set out on yet another voyage to match the previous, only this time we would be fishing for shark. We were to set off from Wiggins Pass, because that was where the boat was kept. We were on the water around 630ish and were heading out of the pass when I noticed some mullet along the beach. We ended up cast netting two 14in mullet. As soon as we got out of the pass we ran about straight out and to the right, after we had run for about 15 or 20 minutes we slowed down and zig-zagged looked for structure. After about 10 minutes of zig-zagging and finding no structure, we anchored and started to fish. The lights on the boat werent working for some reason so we decided not to stay out past dark, and we would get in the car and go somewhere else to fish afterwards. After we got settled I cut a mullet up and tossed it out for sharks, while we rigged all of the other rods. In the middle of a knot the mullet rod starts buzzing! Of course I drop the knot and grab the rod and am now hooked up to what we found out to be a 3 foot white tip. Shortly after releasing the shark, we get another rod and put the mullet head on that. In the mean time Kyle is fishing some cut thread herring he got a publix. He was continiously catching pinfish, which we finally decided to put on a rod. That pinfish payed off big time with a massive cobia. When the fish it, it hit like a shark, real fast. We thought for sure it was going to be a shark, and when it got to the surface, Kyle and John thought that thats what it was. Than the dorsal fun dropped, and I noticed the white stomach. As soon as we made this discovery, everything changed. The fighting belt was brought out, things were moved to make room incase we need to move to the bow are stern whenever, and some phone calls were made. An hour and a half later the fish was boated and measured. It came out to be a whopping 56inches and weighed close to 90 pounds. It took two of us to get it in the boat. The girth was 26 inches and its head was 16 inches wide. This was one big fish, and was close to the to the Florida record, the only problem was that we didnt not have the right amount of leader and line to get it officially weighed and measured. But that was fine with us, because that was an awesome fight, and Kyle faught him like a pro! On the way in we got the lights working luckily, because it was well past dark once we landed the fish. The rod that we caught the cobia on just so happens to be the same rod in which the tarpon was caught on, on the previous voyage!
