Hello, I am planning a trip between late Feb. and late March and I am wondering what I will be able to catch. I have lived in Naples in the past but never fished so I'm not too sure on the seasons for fishing. I will be bringing a 9wt fly rod and don't have access to a boat so I was hoping to catch Snook, Jack Cravelle etc from the beach ,are they even around at that time of the year? I am planning a deep sea trip out of Islamorada for one day but for the remaining week would like to get as much fly-fishing in as possible and preferably catch a few. In your opinion will the beach fishing be ok or does it dry up around that time of year . Would there be a better time to come down when the beach fishing will be better? I live in New England so I don't want to come any later than the end of April but would like to get into as many fish as possible from the beach. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot . Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the inquiry. March is typically our windiest month and can stir up the water but.. can be good when it's warm and not windy. We do start to see some bigger tarpon in late Feb., again if it's warm. When the water hits 72 the tarpon start to show. Having said this I would definately wait until late April to come down if you're able. The wind should be gone and the snook will have started to move from the backcountry to the outside passes, beaches etc. Hers'a a link to a beach cam in Naples.

Also if you not seen the page we have a "local fishing info pg" with some additional info.
Thanks
