I will be visiting the Naples area in the coming weeks and was wondering some basics of surf casting. I was down there last year and tried it out. I had a blast catching mainly catfish. I think I am staying near clam pass(?) but have the ability to travel. Last year a frozen shrimp on a leader, off of a egg weight did the trick for plenty of catfish. I would hopefully like to catch something else. Any help for a midwestern freshwater guy? If the catfish become the main catch, i might have to go find some freshwater 8O .

Go buy a handful of bucktail & flash jigs in varieties of sizes & colours, or plain jig heads & use some Berkley gulp grubs. I like brown jigs, but I use a lot of different colours. Should be some jacks, pompano, cats, & ladyfish & Spanish mackerel around the pier & beach area. I heard tell of some one getting a few snook on flies off the beach the other day. I get live shrimp & cut them into about 2 or 3 pieces, & use a piece to tip my hair jigs. 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader should be sufficient.

Good luck, you never know just what you'll hook into off that beach.
