The cold front that is passing through South West Florida over the next several days will present challenging fishing conditions. But Captain Kevin Merritt reports that there are still opportunities to take fish on the fly in the backcountry.
Captain Kevin recommends mid to late morning starts after the water has warmed up from the overnight chill.
Redfish are less effected by the cold weather than snook. Captain Kevin has found that redfish are cruising the shallows in this weather and can be taken with tan and rust colored shrimp shrimp flies. The water is clear, so long casts are required.
The cold weather has driven the snook into the creeks. Captain Kevin says that small dark EP streamer flies cast to the shallow creek edges late in the morning and in the afternoon can be effective for snook in this weather. If the snook do not come out of the creek holes to the shallow creek edges, EP slider flies fished with sink tip lines could prove effective.
Captain Kevin also reports that the snook and bass action in the canals along Rt 41 can also decent in the cold weather. Small tan and white and chartreuse and white EP flies should produce the best results.
