I'm looking to purchase a budget boat to go backwater fishing in Naples / Marco area.

My main concern is safety in the backwaters and getting there. While Carolina Skiff seems to be in the higher end of my budget - would either the gheenoe or a large jon do the trick as well? Looking for pros and cons from other locals -

Any helpful sites, tips, or maybe even a meeting with some fellow anglers who could help me out on this hunt.

Greg :D

Hi Greg, Thanks for the post. No matter what you have reliability of the vessel is what's important. A jon boat or c skiff will be easier to stand up in than a g-eenoe although I believe you can stand up in them also. Decide what type of fishing you want to do and buy the boat that best fits your situation. There's always trade off with boats. Bigger boats go faster and can hnadle chop better but smaller boats float shallower and can explore up the small creeks better. Feel free to give me a call 239-262-8228. Capt Kvin Merritt would also be happt to share in knowledge. Send me an email and I will forward it to him. My email is mark@evergladesangler.com. Also if your in town stop by the shop and I'd be happy to chat.
Thanks
Mark ward
Owner
Everglades Angler

HI, I had a gheenoe for years and for flats it was great. when I was alone I could pole within feet of fish. Then I bought a J-16 c skiff. The difference is alot . I like the c skiff more .here are some pros and cons
Gheenoe c skiff
light one man operation larger but one man can handle
can get real close to fish larger profile
small not as stable good solid platform
cost 6gal.runs all week cost more to operate/perchase
electric motor will push it takes more electric power to move

In all I Like the c skiff best The good thing is you can pick up a used Gheenoe rigged for about $1000.00 if you don't like it they sell fairly fast
good luck
