The warm weather the past week has brought in some of the springtime tarpon although the've been finicky. The few fish that have been hooked are eating cockroach and orange/tan flies. The upcoming new moon on March 18 will bring fairly strong incoming tides in the morning this week with weaker falling tides in the afternoon. March is typically our windiest month although the winds are forecast to be light to moderate this week averaging 7-13 mph. Snook are becoming somewhat more active with some larger fish being caught in deeper water in the troughs. Redfish in the 18-22" are also being caught along the mangrove shorelines in the backcountry. Oyster bars have been good on the incomimg tides. Gummy minnows and crab fly patterns have been effective. Those using sinking fly lines are having luck also with crab patterns for trout and pompano.
Capt. Ken Chambers reports: Early spring like weather. Crisp mornings leading to warm afternoons. The water is clearing up and the small baitfish are beginning to wash into the islands. Fish seem to be moving out of the backwater bays and preparing for the spring feeding free for all. Looks like mostly sunny weather with tides that are strengthening each day.
Drew Smith with a nice early spring snook caught while fishing with Capt. Ken Chambers
