Capt. Tim reports:
We're still waiting for the bait to show up. Right now if you're lucky enough to get a calm morning, you can find the bait on or off the beaches, once the water tem rises a bit the bait will start showing up inland, hopefully any day now. Until then it's either poling the deep backcountry flats for reds and snook with flies, artificials, or fishing the outer grass beds & troughs for trout & pompano with jigs or sinking or sink tip fly lines.
On the backcountry flats reds & snook are staging on cool mornings waiting for the warm sun to kick-start their metabolism. These fish are generally stationary & easy to see as long as you’re stealthy. A live shrimp, jig, or fly placed quietly within the fish’s line of sight should be taken readily. Pay strict attention to the tides because a strong NE wind will blow the water right from under you & leave you stranded for a while. Time the tides right (I prefer last hour outgoing & first hour or so incoming) and you should have a good shot at some great fish.
Once the tides rise move to the outer grass beds for some good trout action, a Cajun thunder & gulp shrimp in 2-4 feet of water should produce plenty of fish. You can also fish the deeper troughs along those grass beds with a shrimp tipped jig for some great pompano action or for flies the Mark’s Bunny fly with lead eyes, clousers or shrimp patterns work well.
