I was wondering if anybody knew a good formula for tying a snook leader. What is the best material? I can use Mason, but I hear a lot of people saying it is too stiff. Any formulas?

Plain old Mono works fine for me. I use a knotted tapered leader going from 50lb to 40lb to 30lb and then back to 40lb as a shock for the sand paper mouth of a Snook. I use blood knots and use a shorter section when going down to the next lb test. Overall my leader is 8 -9ft.

Some would say this is overkill but it turns the fish fast when they try to run for the trees. On the beach you could scale this down though.

flyhunter,
you never know how big of a snook might be lurking in those bushes. Go big, because some of my best memories are of the big snook that got away in the bushes. It usually comes down to the first 20 seconds of the fight if you are going to land them or not. Plus, snook don't seem very leader shy (especially if you are fishing for them around the bushes).

On the beaches, I've had to scale back to 20 lbs. When the water is REALLY clear, I've spooked these snook with a false cast! You are gonna be using a much smaller fly too on the beaches usually, so the lighter leader makes sense. They are usually a smaller sized fish too, although I've bumped into a few bruisers out there too.
Go get'em!!
