In lieu of the numerous cold fronts were having this winter the fishing has held up well.
Trout are biting on both tides. I’ve been fishing oyster bars on the down side of the current. Yellow or chartreuse jigs tipped with shrimp work well as well as a free lined shrimp or under a cork. I also have been fishing drop offs next to flats. 4-6’ of water seems best.
Red fishing has held up. I’ve been fishing the top ½ of the tide which allows me to access and fish the mangrove shorelines. Shrimp have been working best either free lined or with a split shot or if there is current a shrimp under a float covers more territory. Snook fishing has just been ok with no big fish of late. The snook we have been catching are deep in the backcountry. Again shrimp work and we recently had a good day using gold spoons and small yozuri floating/diving plugs.
It’s hard not to use jigs this time of year. All species of fish eat them, they cover a lot of territory, are easy to use and produce a lot of action. For the fly fisherman we’ve been fishing shoreline for snook and reds and fishing open water with sinking and sink tip lines for trout and pompano. Shrimp and crab patterns have been working along with small white, yellow and chartreuse streamers.
Late winter and early spring is an great time of year to fish with lots of action. Give me a call if you’d like to book a trip.
